Pokemon has now been out for just over a week and already the active daily users outnumber Twitter and engagements are higher than that of Facebook (source). It's not a craze, but rather a nostalgic and higly addictive game which is helping augmented reality progress in terms of adoption.
If you're playing Pokémon Go -- consider yourself an early adopter of innovative AR technology! The data gathered by Niantic, Inc., which was a startup within Google, will surely somehow be utilized to progress the adoption, spread, and development of augmented reality. If you're not familiar with the game, it utilizes your phone's GPS, graphics processor, and camera in order create a truly immersive augmented reality experience. And it's damn fun!
Once you reach level 5, you can pledge allegience to one of 3 teams and then hit up Pokémon Gyms, or Poké Gyms to train your Pokémon to get them stronger and become the very best Pokémaster!
I myself play with a group of friends, repping Team Mystic (blue). The other teams are Instinct (yellow) and Valor (red). It seems that Mystic accounts for aproximately 40% of users (perhaps because people tend to phycologically select the middle option). Checkout the 3 teams and a briefing on their leaders:
Spark is the leader of Team Instinct, the yellow team. Spark is all about trusting your instincts — hence the name of the team. (Spark is not one for nuance.) If you feel that Pokémon are innately talented, and that success in battle can be chalked up to trusting your gut, Instinct is probably the way to go. Team Instinct's mascot is the legendary bird Zapdos.
Blanche is in charge of Team Mystic, the brainiest of the bunch. The blue team is most interested in evolution; beyond that, the members of this faction are cool to a point of intimidation. If you're interested in the science behind what makes Pokémon tick — and are convinced that keeping calm is all it takes for success — choose Team Mystic. Mystic is represented by Articuno, the icy legendary.
Candela is the head of the red team, and she's got spunk for days. Her M.O. is very much in line with what Pokémon trainers have been taught from the get-go: To be the very best Pokémon master, you've got to train for it. Bonding with your Pokémon helps to tap into their strengths, according to Team Valor. If that sounds good to you, go Valor. Also, if you like the fire bird legendary Moltres, that's another reason to go with Valor; Moltres is its mascot.
Pokémon Go is is pushing people to explore the world more (even when their eyes are glued to screens), and is one of pure competition. Gotta catch em all and be the very best, eh? Select the right team and hit the gym, as well as Pokéstops often. Refer to your Pokédex (or reddit) for further information!
